Guernsey employees take part in beach clean
A team of Guernsey employees recently took part in a beach clean at Petit Port.

The group of 38 adults and children, including volunteers from Guernsey College Football Academy (GCFA), gave up their Sunday to clean the beach. Everyone got involved and collected rubbish from the beach and the bottom of the steps, which was then bagged up and taken away.

Amongst the items uncovered on the beach were a giant piece of driftwood and a huge fish. Group Brand Manager, Sophie Jones, said: “There was a lot of rubbish behind the fence at the bottom of the steps, which the Academy boys did a wonderful job of taking up to the top for us.

“We found an incredible piece of driftwood that looks like it might have been the mast of a ship in days gone by, which we then carried up the steps and one of us took it home to dry out and make a mantel piece with! We also found a massive fish, which was pretty smelly, so we promptly threw it back into the water!”

The team later received a letter from the Guernsey Environment Department for its efforts, which said: “Petit Port is one of our most beautiful bays, and on behalf of the Environmental Services Unit, I’d be glad if you could please pass on our thanks and appreciation to everyone who took part. Weekends are precious so this was a very generous gesture by everyone.”

Alongside our focus on what we can give back to the communities in which we do business, we’re also focusing on the health and wellbeing of our staff. And what better way to get some exercise than helping out the local community?

“We are trying to promote health and wellbeing in our office, so the opportunity of all those steps was too good to miss,” said Mike Leonard, Deputy Group CEO.

Thanks to all our volunteers, especially the team from GCFA, who we sponsor. We’re planning to make beach cleans a regular occurrence next year, and we’re even looking into adopting a beach.
