As part of our sponsorship with Foundation ’92
, we want to help create memories that will last a lifetime, both within the community and for our people. And that’s exactly what we did a couple of weeks ago…
As part of our Auction of Promises, we gave our employees the chance to bid for a place in a 5-a-side football tournament playing against the Class of ’92: Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Gary and Phil Neville and Nicky Butt.
These places alone raised over £3,000 for charity, and this was then bolstered further by a raffle for an additional five spots to take over at half time. In total First Central vs the Class of ’92 raised a staggering £4,000 for our local charities of the year.
Held at the Peninsula stadium, home of Salford City FC – just a five-minute drive from the Class of ‘92’s old stomping ground, Old Trafford – our team of footballing wannabes took to the field to try their luck against what was undoubtedly five of Manchester United’s best players. The First Central team proved to be a challenge to the old professionals, going up 4-3 at the end of the first half. But the Class of ’92 showed their skills in the second half, and by the time the final whistle blew, the Manchester legends took the victory 9-7.
We caught up with a few of the First Central team afterwards to get their thoughts on the match…
Harry Gee-Woolley, a Customer Response Agent from our Haywards Heath office, commented: “All my family is from Manchester so I've been bought up by United fans, and despite not being a supporter myself, it was great to play against players that I had watched on the TV throughout my childhood. It's a fantastic opportunity to play against people of that calibre and I don’t think any of us will ever play with players like that ever again in our lives.”
After being pipped to the post in the auction, Craig Turner, from our Finance team, bought a whopping 17 raffle tickets. He commented: “Fantastic and surreal. I was nervous to start with but enjoyed every minute of it. You really appreciate how good they are and also how professional they are. It was hard to get the ball off them and they were competitive towards the end of the game.”
Our recently appointed Head of Claims, Jonathan Guy, came along to cheer on our guys, and said: “I honestly think it's brilliant. All the opportunities we get our people involved in, not just this, make First Central stand out as a great employer. It's the thing that makes the difference between a good company and a great company.”
